Bathon Resignation Effective Dec. 31, 2009
EDWARDSVILLE, December 16, 2009 – By a unanimous vote of the Madison County Board Frank Miles was appointed as the Madison County Treasurer during their monthly meeting held on December 16, 2009. The appointment is effective January 1, 2010.
Miles will fill the vacancy created when Treasurer Fred Bathon submitted a letter resigning from the position as of December 31, 2009. Miles’ appointment runs until December, 2010 when the winner of the general election is sworn into office.
Currently the director of the Madison County Planning and Development Department, Miles is the former District Chief of Staff for U.S. Congressman Jerry Costello. He has served as planning director for the City of Edwardsville, comptroller and finance officer for the Madison County Circuit Clerk’s office and as city administrator & economic developer for the City of O’Fallon (IL).
In announcing the appointment, Dunstan cited Miles’ experience in financial planning and his career of public service. “Frank (Miles) has been responsible for the management of millions of dollars in budgets and has made significant, positive contributions in every position he has held. I am confident in his abilities to effectively and trustfully manage the money of the people of Madison County.”
Dunstan also praised the outgoing treasurer. “Fred Bathon has been an excellent treasurer and public servant,” Dunstan said. “As demonstrated with his initiative to enable taxpayers to pay their property taxes in four installments rather than two, Fred was always working to do everything possible to lessen the burden on the people of Madison County. I join the members of the county board in thanking Fred for his service.”
Miles said his primary responsibility will be to provide the people of Madison County the best service possible. “I will work to effectively and diligently manage the public’s money. I will operate a treasurer’s office that is open to public scrutiny and I will be accountable. I have been entrusted with a great responsibility and I accept that responsibility.”
The Madison County Treasurer’s office interacts with all taxing districts in the county, the approximately 90,000 taxpayers and is charged with collecting the more than $400 million dollars in tax revenue that is distributed to the respective taxing districts.
Miles, 49, is a native of Granite City and currently resides in Edwardsville. He is married and the father of four children. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in Government and Public Affairs and a Masters Degree in Public Administration from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville.
